Under the Skin: Why We Must Explicitly Tackle the Root Causes of Health Inequity

Sharing Session (90 minutes)
Friday, Jul 16
8:00 AM - 9:30 AM
Room 14
Conference Track:
Marketing to Improve Public Health Perception

In 2009, the Ingham County Health Department (MI) initiated its Health Equity and Social Justice Workshops—four-day, dialogue-based sessions that immerse participants in an exploration of the root causes of health inequity. The presenters will share findings from these workshops with a focus on this question: How necessary is it to confront, directly and explicitly, the root causes of inequity—the way racism and other forms of oppression get “under the skin” to create persistent disparities in population health—as opposed to focusing on social determinants or discrete community projects that remediate the consequences of health inequity? Participants will learn the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of strategically using dialogue to transform departmental practice.
