Of every 1,000 live births in Memphis/Shelby County, nearly 13 deaths occur before the baby?s first birthday. All Babies Count (ABC) Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative seeks to improve birth outcomes and ensure more babies make it to their first birthday. Putting Babies on the Ballot, coined by then Shelby County Mayor A.C. Wharton, uses community organization efforts similar to those in political campaigns to reduce infant mortality. Participants will be able to ascertain models of community organizing and acquire skills to apply the models to public health issues.
