The Maurice "Mo" Mullet Lifetime of Service Award
In the Spotlight
NACCHO is accepting nominations for the Maurice "Mo" Mullet Lifetime of Service Award from January 1- March 31. This award honors current or former local health officials for noteworthy service to NACCHO that has reflected the commitment, vigor and leadership exemplified by Mo's distinguished career.
Honoring a Lifetime of Service, Leadership, and Significant Achievements
NACCHO remembers Maurice “Mo” Mullet, MD, who passed away on Sept. 7. Mullet’s distinguished career in public health inspired NACCHO’s “Mo Mullet Lifetime of Service Award,” which honors local health officials for noteworthy service that reflects Mullet’s commitment, vigor, and leadership.
Mullet was health commissioner of Holmes County, OH, for 30 years, first on a part-time basis from 1975 to 1997, then as the first full-time commissioner from 1997 until his retirement in 2005. He also was concurrently part-time health commissioner for neighboring Knox County from 1988 to 1997. During his career, he achieved statewide and national recognition as a leader among local health officials and in the field of public health. He was president of the Ohio Association of Health Commissioners, board chair of the Public Health Foundation, and a charter scholar of the Public Health Leadership Institute. Mullet was a NACCHO board member for three years, vice president for four years, and president from 1992 to 1994. He continued to serve NACCHO as a former president, acting as parliamentarian for the board of directors, as an ex officio member of the bylaws committee, and as a member of the structure and governance workgroup.
As NACCHO joins the public health community in celebrating Mullet’s contributions while mourning his loss, Mullet’s own words during a Holmes County Hospice-sponsored event in 2010 seem apt. “Life is a continuum from birth to death. Dying is the final act of living….When an individual accepts the fact of dying, it is time for love. Love is the only glimpse that we have of eternity.” (Source: Holmes County Journal)
