NACCHO Applauds Eleven Public Health Departments Receiving New National Accreditation

NACCHO Applauds 11 Public Health Departments Receiving New National Accreditation

Washington, DC (March 4, 2013) —

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) congratulates the first nine local and two state health departments that have received accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Each went through a rigorous assessment process to become accredited.

The nine local health departments in this first group of nationally accredited health departments are: Comanche County Health Department (Lawton, OK), Franklin County Health Department (Frankfort, KY), Livingston County Department of Health (Mt. Morris, NY), Northern Kentucky Independent District Health Department (Edgewood, KY), Oklahoma City-County Health Department (Oklahoma City, OK), Spokane Regional Health District (Spokane, WA), The Public Health Authority of Cabarrus County, Inc. d/b/a Cabarrus Health Alliance (Kannapolis, NC), Three Rivers District Health Department (Owenton, KY), and West Allis Health Department (West Allis, WI). The Oklahoma State Department of Health (Oklahoma City, OK) and the Washington State Department of Health (Olympia, WA) have also become accredited. 

“These first nine local health departments are but a small selection from a larger universe of local health departments to become accredited, as many already possess a culture of quality improvement,” said NACCHO Executive Director Robert M. Pestronk. “Local health departments work tirelessly every day to make health easier for people in their communities. One may not always see the work they do, but we are safer and healthier as a nation because of it. Accreditation is one means to demonstrate accountability for that mission.” 

The national accreditation program, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aims to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing the quality and performance of the nation’s public health departments. As the voice of local health departments across the country, NACCHO has supported the movement towards accreditation. NACCHO, in conjunction with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the National Association of Local Boards of Health, and the American Public Health Association, established PHAB in 2007.
