NACCHO Commends Launch of National Public Health Accreditation Program

Washington, D.C. (September 14, 2011)—The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) congratulates the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) today on its official launch of the first national public health accreditation program and encourages its members to become accredited for the important work they do to keep people safe and healthy.

The goal of PHAB’s accreditation program, initiated with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is to improve and protect the health of all people, no matter where they live, by advancing the quality and performance of all state, local, territorial and tribal public health departments in the country.

“Accreditation in public health is fundamental to fulfilling our pledge to the public,” said NACCHO President Lillian Shirley, Director of the Multnomah County Health Department in Oregon. “We are directly responsible to all those who live, work, and learn in our jurisdictions. We owe it to our communities to ensure and to document that we meet the minimum standards they have the right to expect.”

Accreditation is a meaningful way for local health departments to demonstrate their commitment to, and engagement in, continuous quality improvement. The process of becoming accredited can also spur innovation as health departments work to meet the unique needs of their communities while continuing to provide basic services that ensure everyone has access to clean water, safe and healthy food, vaccines and other resources.

“Until now, there has never been a national public health accreditation program,” said NACCHO Executive Director Robert M. Pestronk, who represented NACCHO at PHAB’s launch event today at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. “This is an exciting opportunity for local health departments to demonstrate accountability to their communities and to gain the public support and targeted investments they need to improve local health, despite a challenging economic environment.”

As the voice of local health departments across the country, NACCHO has been involved in the development of PHAB’s program since its inception by contributing directly to the development of PHAB’s accreditation standards and by providing tools and resources to help local health departments prepare to apply and earn policymakers’ support for accreditation.
