Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program: Madison County Health Department, Missouri

Lead is an important part of Madison County's history and economy. With 39% of the housing stock in the area built when high lead content paints were used, lower-income infants and children are especially vulnerable to elevated blood lead levels because families living in poverty are more likely to live in older, substandard housing. In response to the high rates of elevated blood lead levels, the Madison County Health Department embarked on an education and outreach campaign to increase awareness of the dangers of lead poisoning, steps for prevention, and the availability of testing and screening services.
