Adapting Urban Water Systems To Climate Change: New York City Case Study

Downscaled climate change models have shown that New York City is likely to experience increased temperatures and rainfall as well as sea level rise. As part of its multi-pronged sustainability strategy, the city is looking at climate change as a challenge to be met using both mitigation and adaptation.
The city and its agencies have set up several collaborative bodies on adaptation, with urban water management as one of the top working priorities. The coastal location of the city, its large scale and the age of its water and wastewater management infrastructure are some of the main challenges facing the city in terms of adapting their water system to climate change.  This case study provides examples of how New York City is adapting its water systems to the effects of climate change and preparing for future risks. The case study features a climate profile, climate projections for the area, information about adaptation planning in New York City, and lessons learned.
