California Public Health Climate Change Adaptation Strategy

Climate change will impact public health and safety due to increased heat waves and associated air pollution, increased fires and associated air and water pollution, introduction of new diseases, pests and invasive species, impacts to agriculture and water supplies, and more.

The California Department of Public Health and local health departments are taking steps to plan for and protect against these risks. Steps to reduce fires and floods and to promote “Cool Communities” will also protect public health.

This resource provides the California Climate Adaptation Strategy for Public Health and provides strategies to help in efforts with adaptation to:

• Protect against heat;
• Protect against drought;
• Protect against wildfires; and
• Protect against vector-borne disease.

current link to tool is broken. Tool has a section on impacts for public health but primarily discusses impacts for other disciplines. Very comprehensive however, and of importance particularly for those living in the western US.

I thought this was an excellent document. It gives readers a lot to consider, and examples of problems that are already being seen. It might help that California is such a widely varied state because I thought the way they broke the document into the different sections of the state gave an excellent cross-section of things to consider. Enjoyable read.
