NACCHO is the national organization representing local health departments (LHDs). NACCHO supports efforts that protect and improve the health of all people and all communities by promoting national policy, developing resources and programs, seeking health equity, and supporting effective local public health practice and systems. NACCHO provides resources, tools, and assistance to LHDs in the following focus areas:
Since 2006, NACCHO has assisted the U.S. Surgeon General's Office of the Civilian Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps in enhancing MRC units' ability to meet local, state, and national needs through collaboration, coordination, and capacity-building activities. The MRC is a community-based, civilian volunteer program that helps build the public health infrastructure of communities nationwide. Each MRC unit is organized and trained to address a range of challenges from public health education to disaster response.
In 2009, NACCHO’s Model Practice program recognized 23 initiatives that demonstrate exemplary and replicable qualities in response to public health needs. The Fall 2009 issue (volume 8, issue 4) highlights some of these award-winning model practices. More » |
