Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Home Care Plus
State: IA
Date Added: 11/06/2009
Themes: Vaccine Planning and Administration
Issue Summary: Website for scheduling H1N1 vaccinations at private clinics proves successful
Description of Issue(s): We have successfully implemented a secure webite scheduling program for people who qualify for H1N1 vaccine to sign up for private clinics.
Actions taken to address the issue(s): People are identified as eligible for vaccine via one of a few methods.? Those with chronic medical conditions are identified by running a simple report of the medical office database by ICD9 code. We can run this by age, zip code, etc.? This is then cross referenced via an Excel spreadsheet to the same data extrapolated from the hospital. We then run labels and send postcards to the individuals to sign up on the web based program for their appt.? Others are identified via email distribution lists that are maintained through public health.? For example, I have an email database of over 100 private daycare or facility based daycares that provide care to infants under teh age of 6 months.? I communicate to this group via one email and blast it out.? I have email distribution lists set up for school superintendents, school nurses, businesses, etc.
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: We have implemented and have successfully kept wait times to 5 minutes or under, have never run out of vaccine since we only open enough appts for people that we have vaccine for, there is no unproductive time for our staff and we have guaranteed that those in the highest of the high risk groups have been vaccinated.?
