Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Chicago Department of Health
State: IL
Date Added: 11/11/2009
Themes: Vaccine Planning and Administration
Issue Summary: Mass vaccinaton in Chicago uses "Disney" concept
Description of Issue(s): The demand that we are seeing here is tremendous. We are currently running 6 sites per day, three days per week (Tues, Thurs and Sat), 5 hours per day; we started on October 24th and so far we have not seen a decline in the demand.
Actions taken to address the issue(s): We used the "Disney" concept at our busiest location when we found ourselves facing a situation where literally hundreds of people had begun lining up for vaccinations at 5am one morning when the clinic was not opening until 3pm. We are using city college facilities as our public vaccination sites, so the presence of so many people in line was affecting the student?s ability to get to their classes and the ability of the college?s faculty and staff?s ability to conduct the business of the school. So, the numbers were distributed and people were asked to return later as a means to decompress the crowd at the school so early in the day. We then honored the numbers that people had when they returned and we also made accommodations for anyone who wanted to go to another site that had smaller wait times.? The 1200 numbers that we gave out was based on our projection of the number of vaccinations that could reasonably be done in a five hour timeframe.?
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: Now that we have five days of clinics under our belts, our nurses are getting much more efficient and we are now up to 1600 numbers at multiple sites. So, while a little hectic, overall things here are working very well.
