Story from the Field

Name of Health Department/Agency: Delaware County Public Health
State: IA
Date Added: 12/28/2009
Themes: Vaccine Planning and Administration,Vaccine Supply and Distribution
Issue Summary: Vaccinating School-Age Children
Description of Issue(s): We debated the best way to immunize the greatest number of school-age children in a rural county where distance and tranxportation can be issues for the most vulnerable.
Actions taken to address the issue(s): Public Health invited school administration and school nurses from each of the schools in our county to a meeting to discuss school-based clinics, and what the role of the schools would be. It was made clear to the schools that they were under no obligation to allow PH to come in during school time to provide vaccine to their students. All schools were willing to have PH come into their school to provide vaccinations. They were willing to assist with informing parents and obtaining consent.
Outcomes that resulted from actions taken: All school-age children in our county have been given the opportunity to be vaccinated for H1N1. Overall, we were abe to vaccinate approximately 50% of school-age children.
