NACCHO Health and Disability Meeting 2009

In April 2009, NACCHO's Health and Disability Project convened its workgroup in Washington, DC. Representatives from organizations, such as Paralyzed Veterans of America, National Council on Disability, Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities, Health and Human Services, and CDC, presented at the meeting on topics such as: the national efforts to improve the health of persons with disabilities (PWDs), the governmental perspective on improving the health of PWDs, and integrating health and disability into public health programming.

The objectives of the meeting included:

1. Develop an understanding of the unique skills of all members of the Health and Disability Workgroup.
2. Increase their awareness of national efforts to improve the health of people with disabilities (PWDs).
3. Be familiar with the disability and health work taking place in several local health departments (LHDs).
4. Increase their awareness about NACCHO's work as it relates to the health of PWDs.
5. Develop ideas for how to integrate health and disability into public health programming (one way to do something with little or no funding!).
6. Develop actionable policy recommendations for NACCHO leadership and new administration.
