Charles County Health Department (MD)
Services are provided to infants and toddlers who may be delayed in development or have disabilities. About 427 are receiving support services and 825 are eligible to receive resource coordination. The Charles County Health Department and its community partners conducted a pilot project to promote the health and well-being of people with disabilities funded by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).
Charles County Department brought the Healthy Lifestyles curriculum to their community, by first going to a train the trainer program. Charles County conducted a Web-based Disability and Health Perceived Barriers survey to assess barriers experienced by individuals with disabilities in regards to health promotion and disease prevention.
NACCHO is currently offering technical assistance support to local health departments to improve their capacity to develop or enhance health promotion programs for people living with disabilities through coordination of existing health department and community services.
Cortland County Health Department helped to co-conduct a three-day “Train the Trainer” workshop for the Healthy Lifestyles for People Living with Disabilities Program. The workshop was offered to other NACCHO Technical Assistance Project participants. The workshop provided necessary training tools to plan and implement the Healthy Lifestyles Curriculum for Individuals with Disabilities.
