NACCHO, in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is working to reduce fatalities and injuries associated with impaired driving. Four demonstration sites in rural communities identified effective programs.

Columbus (OH) Public Health Teen Traffic Safety Mini Grants

Teen Traffic Safety Mini Grants targeted high school students at 14 out of 41 Franklin County high schools addressing the public health issue of injury prevention, specifically motor vehicle related injury and death. The goal of the program was to increase high school student safety belt use by implementing safety belt utilization education and demonstration programs, as well as by giving student groups ownership of the traffic safety programming in 14 high schools.

Impaired Driving Prevention in Rural Communities is a compendium of programs undertaken by local health departments (LHDs) in rural jurisdictions to combat the problem of impaired driving. This compendium profiles select rural LHDs, their approaches to addressing impaired driving, successes they have achieved, and the obstacles they have encountered during program implementation.
