Principles for Collaboration between Mental Health and Public Health

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) and the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) held a consensus meeting in 2004 to encourage collaboration between mental health and public health communities.

 

Participants identified key challenges to incorporating public health practices into mental health services and exchanged resources and expertise to improve the public’s health. This issue brief represents the first in a series of steps that NACCHO took to call attention to the link between public health and mental health. This document provides a historical context from which to consider the relationship between mental health and public health, background about mental health disorders, and surveillance and infrastructure.
